Instructions for SearchLaw
for Legislative Bill Status
 
    SearchLaw allows a large selection of search options to enable users to quickly locate desired bills.

    SELECT BILL BY NUMBER

            To locate House Bills simply enter HB followed by the number. e.g. HB 1
            To locate Senate Bills enter SB followed by the number without spaces. e. g. SB2001

            The bill title will be displayed.  Click on Original HTML to see the desired bill as proposed.

    LOCATE CODE SECTION REFERENCES

            To locate all bills that cite a particular section of the Mississippi Code enter the code section number. e.g. 77-9-521. Click on the bill title to see the bill with the location of the code section surrounded by arrows.

    FULL TEXT SEARCH FOR TERMS

            Words without connectors are treated as a phrase. e.g. eminent domain will locate only those bills which contain the phrase "eminent domain".

            Connectors you may use with SearchLaw are the following:

      After you have run a search, SearchLaw displays a list of documents which matched the search criteria. The list includes the documents’ title, the number of hits and the Original format link.  The list will appear as follows:

    To display the document with the hits highlighted, click the bill title.  At the top of the document, several options exist: Previous document, Next document, First Hit, Back to results, and New Query.  For example:

    "Documentl Title" is the title of the bill being viewed.
   " Previous Document" will take you to the previous document found.
    "Next Document" will take you to the next document found.
    "First hit" will take you to the first hit in the document.
    "Original HTML" will take you to the original bill without the hits highlighted.
    "Back to Results" takes you back to the results page.
    "New Search" will take you back to the 98bills home page.
    "Get Status of Bill" will take you to a quickfind form to search for the currrent status of the bill being displayed.
    "Mississippi Code Search" will take you to a quickfind form where you can retrieve code sections mentioned in the bill. (Only available to subscribers to code)
    "Mississippi Code Table of Contents" will take you to the Table of Contents of the Mississippi Code. (Only available to subscribers to code)

    Each hit will be surrounded by arrows. By clicking on the right arrow you move to the next search term found.  The last arrow will be a double arrow and will take you to the next document. For example:

SECTION 1. Section 19-3-79, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

19-3-79. (1) Any person, corporation or other legal entity required to obtain a state <gaming> license to conduct legal <gaming> aboard a cruise vessel or vessel, as defined in Section 27-109-1, as prescribed by the Mississippi <Gaming> Control Act shall, before applying for such license, provide the Mississippi <Gaming> Commission with a written notice of intent to apply for a license. The "notice of intent to apply for a <gaming> license" shall be on a form prescribed by the executive director of the commission and shall state the county in which the intending licensee desires to conduct legal <gaming> aboard a cruise vessel or vessel, as the case may be. Within ten (10) days after receipt of a notice of intent to apply for a <gaming> license, the commission shall require such person, corporation or legal entity to publish the notice once each week for three (3) consecutive weeks in a newspaper having general circulation in the county in which the intending licensee desires to conduct legal <gaming> aboard a cruise vessel or vessel, as the case may be.

    The last arrow will be green and will take you to the next document.

    Enter the code section number and select "Find Section".  The code section list will appear. Retrieve the code section by selecting the Original HTML format. Note: If the select the code title link you will be taken to the code section with highlights which is unneccessary.
